The Fieri Consort present a carefully picked selection of Italian madrigals ‘Englished’ by an unknown gentleman, published in the 1588 anthology Musica Transalpina, featuring works by Ferrabosco, Conversi, Marenzio, Lasso and Palestrina, as well as England’s own William Byrd. The intimate relationship between words and music was maintained as far as possible to demonstrate the key to the Italian madrigal form, and English composers took inspiration from the Italian style but made it their own. The Courtesan’s Gaze

The Courtesan’s Gaze takes its name from the duet ‘Begl’occhi’ and is inspired by the famous and controversial portrait of Barbara Strozzi holding the viewer’s gaze. Barbara’s father Giulio Strozzi led an academic study group for whom Barbara performed and composed music as a young woman. It has been believed for centuries that she also acted as a courtesan in this circle and was part of considerable scandal.
