Out of the Shadows
November 26, 2016|7:30 pm - 9:00 pm£15
The Fieri Consort explores the transition from darkness to light through the redemption of man, from the torturous chromaticism of the murderous composer Prince Carlo Gesualdo, to the searingly beautiful harmonies of 21st-century MacMillan, and the radiant compositions of William Byrd.
Included are some rare gems of the choral repertoire, such as a setting of the oldest known hymn, the greek text ‘Phos Hilaron’ (‘O Gladsome Light’); Orlando Gibbons’ intensely expressive ‘What is our life?’, which sets the words written by Sir Walter Raleigh whilst awaiting execution in the Tower of London; and American shape note-singing, a stark and wonderfully anachronistic style preserved nearly intact from early settlers and not often heard outside of the puritanical traditions of the deep south.
